"Just a real nice surprise" (Clark!) Lol! That was the joke of the day when Eric pulled in this real nice but rare for Ashtabula Lake Trout, also known as a "Laker". NOT a Stealhead! To put it in prospective as to how rare they are, I don't think anybody has ran as many trips as I have out of the port of Ashtabula in the last 40 years and that Laker was only the 4th one that we ever landed aboard The Trophy. And just like Cousin Eddy said in Christmas Vacation, Just a real nice surprise! Lol!

And it's nothing new for Eric's family to catch the occasional unusual species. It wasn't too many years ago on one of their other trips that we hooked and they landed a 40 pound Catfish! It just goes to show that you just never know what you're going to hook into out there! In these past 40 years besides the usual Walleye, Steelhead and Perch aboard The Trophy we've caught and landed Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Brown Trout, Palamino Trout, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Muskies and the aforementioned Catfish and Lakers, Burbots, not to mention the White Bass, White Perch, Gobies and I'm sure I'm forgetting some other species!

But getting back to the main event, Walleye fishing remains just as good as it can possibly be for us. There are so many fish out there and there has been for over a month now that it is truly unbelievable. I'm not big on social media but once in a while I take a glance at some of the forums that deal with fishing off of Ashtabula. It cracks me the heck up how so many guys are always saying and even in recent days that things will be getting better soon when the big schools finally get here! I'm like WHAT! What's better then "as good as it gets"! And that is what it is RIGHT NOW! Fast & furious! IF you even half way know what you're doing out there! Ha!

So we've been dealing with the typical Lake Erie challenges that mother nature keeps insisting on throwing at us. We've had a couple more of those "too rough to fish days" and a handful of days where we landed smack dab in horrific bug hatches out there. We were very fortunate that the Walleyes on those days were just plain suicidal and that we were able to get the heck off the lake very quickly! All just so I could get back and spend the rest of the day cleaning the boat! Ugh! Oh the joys of having that "dream job" that everybody insists that I have! Lol! We'll see what kind of excitement awaits us these next two coming weeks. I can hardly wait!
